BALANCE & HARMONY

Biophilic Design

Humans have a natural inclination to seek connections with other living organisms and natural environments and that being in natural environments has positive psychological and physiological effects. Biophilic design is a design philosophy that recognizes the importance of our connection to the natural world and aims to integrate nature into our everyday built environments.

It is an innovative approach that creates environments which incorporates natural elements and patterns that includes not only the physical environment but also considering acoustic qualities, scents and even the use of natural materials and finishes.

The holistic incorporation of these elements creates a harmonious and balanced environment that enhances well-being, productivity, a sense of balance, tranquility and overall quality of life. By bringing natural elements into the environment, Goosebumps Garden seeks to create spaces that are more harmonious, restorative and supportive of human health and happiness.

SUSTAINABLE & ETHICAL PRACTICES

Made to Order Production

Demand driven production focuses on producing goods based on confirmed customer orders, rather than speculative forecasts or excessive inventory. This demand-driven approach ensures that products are manufactured only when there is a genuine need, minimizing the risk of overproduction and subsequent waste.

This approach helps avoid unnecessary consumption of raw materials, energy and other resources. It contributes to increased resource efficiency, reducing environmental impacts associated with resource extraction and processing. By embracing made-to-order practices, Goosebumps Garden contributes to sustainable manufacturing by reducing waste, conserving resources and operating in a more environmentally conscious manner.

Repurposing Materials

Repurposing materials plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainability through the reduction of waste, conservation of resources, mitigation of environmental pollution and curtailing overall energy consumption.  This approach reduces the linear "take, make, dispose" model and promotes a more sustainable and regenerative system.

HERITAGE

"Tel Sarma" Craftsmanship

Tel sarma has a rich history and has been practiced in Turkey since 18th century. The art of wire embroidery has its roots in the Ottoman Empire, where it was widely used to embellish traditional garments, textiles, and accessories. Historically, tel sarma was a highly valued craft, and its products were often associated with luxury and opulence. Embroidery was used to adorn garments worn by royalty, nobility, and wealthy individuals.

The technique involves manipulating thin metallic wires, typically made of silver or gold, and stitching them onto fabric using a needle. This type of embroidery requires great skill and precision, as the wires are carefully shaped and arranged to form various patterns, motifs, and geometric designs. The outcome creates a shimmering effect due to the use of metallic threads.

Tel sarma embroidery continues to be appreciated for its exquisite craftsmanship and artistic beauty. It is often seen on special occasions, traditional ceremonies and cultural events. It is a significant aspect of Turkish textile heritage, representing the mastery of intricate wire embroidery techniques and the enduring beauty of traditional craftsmanship. Goosebumps Garden is proud to present this traditional form of art by incorporating into modern designs allowing the tradition to thrive and evolve in contemporary contexts.

OZEL ALTAN

Yasemin Ozel Altan (London, 1989) is an artist specializing in biophilic decorative design. All of her pieces are individually handcrafted and each item is a unique collectible. Ozel Altan was raised in Istanbul, received her MA in Fashion & Luxury Brand Management in London and relocated to New York. As of 2021, she works from her Los Angeles home studio.

Being easily moved by the late neolithic period, her adoration of ancient near eastern antiquities shows in her work. Also deeply influenced by Japanese aesthetics and philosophies, she incorporates wabi-sabi in her work as a means to mirror the very imperfection of beauty in nature. The authentic essence in her creations is weaved by various inspirations that range from cubism to ancient pottery but most of all, her single-minded approach to challenge artificiality and experience beauty in its primitive and earthly form.

Ozel Altan has an explorative approach and she likes to pursue new materials to achieve an exotic look. At the studio, she experiments with different construction techniques to craft organic shapes and textures. Her passion in sculpting decoratives engraved by nature’s touch derives from questioning the values of contemporary luxury in our age of environmental decline. By depicting nature, she aims to emphasize the notions of connectedness, unity and abundance that are inherent to it.
